I love well-behaved spiders! They are, in fact, how most people find my site. Unfortunately, my network has a limited bandwidth and pictures take up bandwidth. Spiders ask for lots and lots of pages and chew up lots and lots of bandwidth which slows things down considerably for regular folk. To counter this, you'll see all the text on the page but the images are being suppressed. Also, some system options like merges are being blocked for you.
Note: Permission is NOT granted for spiders, robots, etc to use the site for AI-generation purposes. I'm sure you're thrilled by your ability to make revenue from my work but there's nothing in that for my human users or for me.

Description of Subject Matter: This section is used on this site and may include several animals from several sections of the zoo: sloth bears (from Asia Trail) and spectacled bears (from Beaver Valley).
On January 9, 2006, a new sloth bear cub was born. Six months later, the zoo's main donor for the animal selected a name for him -- Balawat. All of one pound at birth, he was the offspring of Hana (age 11) and Merlin (age 24). Merlin does not live with Hana and the cub because these bears are usually solitary in the wild; males do not take part in cub rearing. The cub will nurse until he's two or three years old, but by June he was also eating solid food, including insects, fruits, nuts, and dry dog food. In the wild, Sloth Bears eat mostly termites and ants, as well as some fruit.
Sloth bears are unique bears. Unlike other bears, the moms carry their cubs on their backs; the cubs will use mom for transportation until they are nine months old. Adults have a special ridge of hair on their backs for the cubs to hold on to.
Sloth bears have two fewer teeth than other bears. They are missing their upper incisors to help them suck up insects. In addition, they can close their nostrils so they don't inhale dirt when they're sucking up their dinners. They use their long claws to tear open termite mounds.
Sloth bears live mostly in India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. There are only 71 sloth bears in zoos worldwide, and with no more than 10,000 left in the wild, they are considered highly endangered.

(Only some pages are loaded with full-sized images and those usually get removed after three months.) I still have them though. 1981 photos: From 1979 to 1984, I lived in downtown Washington DC. From 1979 to 1981, I experimented with some weirder pocket cameras which generated 110mm and 126mm negatives. They were crap. From 1981 to 2002, photos were taken using a Pentax ME Super camera. From 1966 to 1989, all of my pictures except those taken with the experimental cameras were slides which is what I had grown up on. Until 1997, I was taking at most a couple of hundred photos a year. Trips this year: None except to visit my girlfriend up in New York. Image quality for my pictures is variable because these are scans of slides and/or prints at varying quality/resolutions. The Great Pandemic Digitizing Project: When I was first setting up my website in August, 2000, I had decided to digitize some of my favorite pre-digital slides and prints. The scans were fairly low resolution but they were good enough. With COVID forcing me to stay indoors, I decided to rescan ALL of my pre-digital images from multiple sources (slides, prints, and negatives) at a much higher resolution and quality setting. (I digitized Dad's slides at the same time). Instead of replacing my original scans, I added the new scans to existing pages, figuring I'd select the best ones later. As a result, multiple versions of images appear on most of these early pages. At some point, I'll take the time to do a final review and get rid of the duplicates.
