Michigan State University (MSU) is a co-educational public research university in East Lansing, Michigan USA. Founded in 1855, it was the pioneer land-grant institution and served as a model for future land-grant colleges in the United States under the 1862 Morrill Act. MSU pioneered the studies of packaging, hospitality business, and music therapy. Today its study-abroad program is the largest of any single-campus university in the country, offering more than 200 programs in more than 60 countries on all continents including Antarctica. It is listed as a Public Ivy, which recognizes top public research universities in the United States.
Following the introduction of the Morrill Act, the college became coeducational and expanded its curriculum beyond agriculture. After World War II, the number of students tripled as the institution became a major university. Today, MSU is the seventh-largest university in the United States, with 45,520 students and 4,500 faculty members.
MSU's Division I sports teams are called the Spartans. They compete in the Big Ten Conference in all sports except ice hockey, in which the team is part of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. MSU's football team won the Rose Bowl in 1954, 1956, and 1988 and boasts three national championships. Its men's basketball team won the NCAA National Championship in 1979 and 2000. The MSU men's ice hockey has won national titles in 1966, 1986, and 2007.

1975 photos: From 1966 to 1975, our family lived in Franklin, Michigan while Dad worked for Kelly Services in Detroit.
In 1975, Dad left Kelly Services, joined Kimberly-Clark Corporation, and moved to Terrace Bay, Ontario, Canada.
From 1975 to 1979, I was a full-time student at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. I didn't take many photos while at MSU. Dad stopped taking pictures entirely after the separation.
From 1954 to 1975, the bulk of these pictures were taken by my Dad, Glenn Guthrie At the time, he was using a complicated, but normal for the day, manual Kodak with light meters and such. All of Dad's pictures from this time were slides.
From 1966 (when I started taking pictures) to 1979, I was using a Kodak Instamatic for most of my photos.
From 1966 to 1989, all of my pictures were slides which is what I had grown up on.
From 1966 to 1997, I was taking at most a couple of hundred photos a year.
Image quality is going to be variable because these are scans of slides and/or prints.
The images shown here were scanned in two phases. In the early years of the website, I rescanned a selection of pre-digital images, all at fairly low quality settings. During the COVID pandemic, I launched the Great Rescanning Effort, rescanning ALL of my pre-digital images from various media (prints, slides, negatives, etc) at higher resolution and quality settings. Mutilple versions of images -- some from the initial scannning phase, some from prints, some from slides/negatives -- were posted so there are frequently duplicate images on the same page. At some point, I hope to have time to do a final review and get rid of the duplicates but that'll have to wait until all of the pre-digital images are finally posted.
Family trips this year: By this point, with everyone having graduated from high school and moved out of the house and my parents falling apart as they moved to Terrace Bay, Ontario, family trips were no longer happening.
